ENVIS Centre on Himalayan Ecology 

 

The Environmental Information System (ENVIS) Centre on Himalayan ecology was established at the headquarters of G.B. Pant Institute of Himalayan Environment and Development (GBPIHED) in the financial year 1992-93 with the fiscal support from the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF), Government of India. ENVIS Centre on Himalayan ecology is a part of ENVIS network centres in India coordinated by the MoEF; the national focal point in the country for collating  information from various ENVIS centres and providing national scenarios to the international programme INFOTERRA of the UNEP (United Nationas Environment Programme). ENVIS Centres essentially help in handling of huge and varied information relevant to environmental management and development.

Collection of information on various District Information Centres, Universities/University Campuses, Research Centers, NGOs, Experts, and Institutions working in the Indian Himalayan region(IHR).

Publication of 16 volumes of ENVIS Bulletin and five volumes of ENVIS Newsletter on the aspects of Himalayan Ecology and Development.

Publication of 3 issues of ENVIS Monographs – i)  Natural resource management and development in Himalaya : A recourse to issues and strategies, ii) Indian Himalaya : A demographic database, and iii) Resource Information Database of the Indian Himalaya.

Dissemination of databases of about 600 books and 1700 research papers related to the aspects of Himalayan Ecology.

Development of ENVIS Website on Himalayan Ecology <http://gbpihed.gov.in/envis/envis.html>.

Dissemination of available information (including query and news-clipping series) through print/electronic media to 95 District Information Centres (spreading in 12 Himalayan states of the country), 30 Universities/University Campuses, 10 Research Centres, 5 Engineering Colleges, and to a number of NGOs and Experts working at different locations in the Indian Himalayan region(IHR)

Development of visual distribution of secondary datasets of all the districts of the IHR by the use of GIS tool.

Online of ENVIS Bulletins, Newsletters and Monographs (w.e.f. 1993 onwards) on ENVIS website.

Compilation and updation of the Ph.D. theses, carried out on Himalayan eco-system in the Institute, on the ENVIS Website.

Development of ‘Management Information System (MIS) model’ with visual distribution of secondary datasets of all the districts of the IHR by the use of GIS tools.

Uploading the user query form, feedback form, photo gallery web page to ENVIS Website.
