Since its establishment in 1988 as an autonomous Institute under the Ministry of Environment & Forests, G.B. Pant Institute of Himalayan Environment & Development at Kosi-Katarmal, Almora has been actively engaged to devise suitable Research and Development (R&D) strategies in the Indian Himalayan Region (IHR) and maintain a balance of intricate linkages between socio-cultural, ecological, economic and physical systems that could lead to sustainability. To achieve this, the Institute follows a multidisciplinary and holistic approach in all its R&D programmes with an emphasis on interlinking natural and social sciences. A conscious effort is made to ensure participation of local inhabitants for long-term acceptance and success of various programmes
